Once You See It, You Can't Unsee It
The Science Behind Why REACH Works
There’s a phenomenon that happens to almost everyone and almost no one can explain.
You learn a new word. An unusual one. You’ve never heard it before, never needed it, never noticed it sitting in your vocabulary gap. And then, within 48 hours, you hear it three times. On a podcast. In a meeting. In the book you happen to be reading that night. You feel almost haunted by it. You start to wonder if someone is playing a trick on you.
No one is playing a trick on you. Your brain just woke up.
What you’re experiencing is called the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, also known as the Frequency Illusion. The name is strange (it traces back to a German left-wing militant group someone happened to read about and then immediately kept encountering), but the science behind it is straightforward. Once your brain is introduced to a new concept, a new pattern, a new piece of information, it begins to notice that thing everywhere. Not because it suddenly appeared everywhere. It was always there. Your reticular activating system, the part of your brain that filters what’s worth your attention, has simply been recalibrated. It’s been told: this matters. Start seeing it.
The word was always in the book. You just couldn’t read it before.
I think about this phenomenon all the time when I think about what we built with REACH Pathways and Chicago Scholars. Because what we are doing, at its core, is not just college or career exploration. What we are doing is triggering the Frequency Illusion on purpose. Deliberately. By design.
And I think that is one of the most important things we have done.
Here is the problem that REACH was built to solve at scale. And I want to be honest about it, because softening it doesn’t serve anyone.
Young people who are underresourced, first-generation, growing up in communities where the economic floor is low and the ceiling is hard to see, don’t lack potential. They don’t lack intelligence. They don’t lack ambition. What they often lack is the first exposure. The first time they see someone who looks like them, sounds like them, came from a neighborhood like theirs, and made it somewhere real. The first time a career path stops being a concept and becomes a possibility.
When that first exposure never comes, the brain never gets recalibrated. The reticular activating system never gets the signal. And all those opportunities that are technically “out there,” all those jobs, all those fields, all those futures that were always in the book, remain invisible. Not because they don’t exist. Because the student’s brain was never told to look.
That is the real inequity. Not just the lack of resources. The lack of the first mirror.
When we designed REACH, we built a platform that creates that first mirror on purpose.
The community features. The leaderboards. The quests hosted by near peers. The peer recognition. The awards and achievements. These are not just engagement tools. They are not gamification in the trivial sense of the word. Every one of those features is an exposure engine. Every time a student sees another young person, someone their age, from a city like Chicago or Detroit or the South Side or the West Side, earn a badge or climb a leaderboard or get recognized for exploring a career in engineering or finance or medicine, their brain receives a signal. A signal that says: that is possible. That is a real person. That person looks like me.
And the brain, once it receives that signal, cannot receive un-receive it.
This is how REACH works. Not just as a platform but as a psychological architecture. We are not telling students what to believe about themselves. We are building the conditions under which they begin to believe it themselves. There is a difference. And the difference is everything.
The first exposure happens inside REACH. But the Frequency Illusion kicks in outside of it. The student who saw a peer earn recognition for exploring data science goes home that night and their brain starts tagging things. The news story about a tech company. The uncle who works in IT. The college counselor who mentions a scholarship in STEM. Things that would have scrolled past before now register. Connect. Stack. Because the brain was told to look. Because the frequency is now visible.
We didn’t build a platform. We built a spark.
The data bears this out in a way I did not fully anticipate. And honestly, it is the number I am most proud of.
We have 46,000 users on REACH. Those 46,000 young people have had 110,000 interactions with REACH-E, our AI tool. I want you to sit with that for a second. 110,000 conversations between a student and an AI that was built to help them explore who they could become.
Now here is the part that changes everything. More than 60 percent of those 110,000 interactions are not about careers. They are not about job listings or salary data or degree requirements. They are about belief.
“Can someone like me actually do this?”
“Do I belong in that kind of role?”
“Is it realistic for a kid from where I’m from to get there?”
That is what 60 percent of the conversations are about. Belief.
And I want to tell you why that does not surprise me anymore, even though it stopped me cold when I first saw it.
It does not surprise me because that is exactly what the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon predicts. The student didn’t come to REACH-E with a belief question first. They came to explore. They saw peers succeeding. They saw pathways that felt, for the first time, like theirs. The frequency illusion kicked in. And then, inevitably, the question underneath all of it surfaced: if I can see it, does that mean I can be it?
That is not a curriculum question. That is not a career readiness question. That is a self-concept question. It is the deepest question a young person can ask. And they are bringing it to REACH because REACH is where they first began to see themselves.
60 percent. More than half of every conversation is really a conversation about identity. About what feels possible. About whether the thing the brain has now been trained to see is actually meant for them.
We built an AI tool that became a belief companion. And it happened because we understood the science of exposure from 30 years of documented success of Chicago Scholars before we fully understood that we understood it.
Here is what I want people to understand about what REACH is and what it is not.
We are not trying to be present for every moment of a student’s journey. We are not a school. We are not a counselor. We are not a mentor who walks beside someone for years. There are organizations that do that beautifully and we are grateful they exist.
What REACH does is something different. And in some ways, something harder to explain but more durable in its effect.
We are the first mirror.
We are the place where, for the first time, a 16-year-old from a neighborhood with a 40 percent graduation rate sees a peer who looks like her earn recognition for exploring a career in architecture. We are the place where a kid who has never heard the word “actuary” hears it and, two weeks later, can’t stop hearing it. We are the place where the reticular activating system gets recalibrated. Where the brain gets told: you belong in rooms you have never been allowed to imagine.
Once that happens, it does not unhappen. That is the durability of this. That is the brilliance of it. That is what the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon tells us about the architecture of belief.
You cannot un-see what you have been shown. You cannot un-know what you have been allowed to know. And in communities where the mirrors have been systematically missing, all it takes is one exposure, the right exposure, a real and resonant exposure, to permanently recalibrate what a young person believes is meant for them.
46,000 students. 110,000 conversations. More than 60 percent of them about something deeper than a job title.
I am proud of those numbers. And I am hungry about them. Because there are millions of young people who have not had the first exposure yet. Millions of brains that have not been recalibrated. Millions of futures that are technically visible, technically possible, but still functionally invisible because no one has triggered the frequency yet.
That is the work. That is what’s left.
We did not build REACH to win a pitch competition, though we have. We did not build it to collect data, though the data is undeniable. We built it because we believed that the first mirror matters more than almost anything else in a young person’s development. And we built it because we understood, even before we had the language for it, that once a student sees themselves in a future that is real and specific and populated by people who look like them, the world begins to conspire in their favor.
The word was always in the book. We just built the place where they first learned to read it.
Now they can see it everywhere.

Back in the 1970s and 80s when I was leading the Montgomery Ward/Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program in Chicago, we were connecting 2nd to 6th grade youth from Cabrini-Green with volunteers from Wards and other businesses in Chicago.
An underlying value was that we knew the kids were smart. Most had well developed "street smarts". When they saw something they wanted they found ways to get it. Through our volunteers and program activities we tried to show that reading, learning, jobs and careers were things they might "want", knowing that once the youth took ownership of that "want" were were no longer trying to convince them to apply time and effort to the task, but were helping them as they pursued their goals.
It seems like the REACH program has the same goal. I hope it can be made widely available. Have you found a way to partner with other tutor, mentor and youth-serving programs in Chicago and elsewhere, so they might offer this to the kids in their programs, as part of their own on-going activities?
